Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real train wreck. We tried to {compensate|address the situation, but it was like trying to stop a flood with a cocktail stick. We're still picking up the shards and feeling the blow of this disaster.

This problem has spiraled out of control. It's a total fiasco. We've tried just about everything to fix it, but nothing seems to be effective. At this point, it feels like we're doomed. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a train wreck of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so horrifically bad that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to understand the sheer extent of destruction and just throws its hands up, opting for a weak, desperate giggle as a coping mechanism.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just plain bad. And check here the laughter you were experiencing morphs into a sigh.
In the end, you are left with a sense of utter perplexity. You question about the purpose of it all. Was this a joke?
Or were we just simply unfortunate enough to witness this spectacle unfold?
Catastrophe of Epic Proportions
The tsunami struck suddenly, destroying entire cities in its path. Buildings collapsed like sandcastles, and the screams that ensued was deafening. Thousands were trapped beneath rubble, their fate unknown. The magnitude of the disaster was unprecedented, rendering survivors to face a future forever scarred.
Rescue efforts sprang into action, struggling against time and hazardous conditions to rescue those still trapped. The nations watched in horror as the full magnitude of the disaster became apparent, offering condolences to the afflicted population.
Dreadful Day Ever
It all started with a terrible case of uncontrollable hair. I couldn't make it to look presentable. As I was running out the door, I trippedover and dropped my lunch all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was totally behind schedule for a very important appointment.
I in a state of utter panic. My {boss|mentor|was absolutely furious. I attempted to explain, but it was no use.
The rest of the day was absolutely horrendous. was a catastrophe. I get anything done.
By the time I reached my destination, I was exhausted. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
